A popular game created in France, the game of roulette is a staple in any casino around the world. It consists of a wheel with numbered and colored sections, and a table where players can place their bets. The wheel has number from 1 to 36 which are colored red and black alternatively, and a green zero slot (or two in case of American Roulette). The French and European versions of roulette are very similar – with a main difference being that bets have different names – while the American version has an extra “double zero” pocket, which increases the chances for the house.
Types of Bets
When playing online roulette on, for example, Gclub, players have several options in terms of what they can bet on. Bets can be placed on single numbers, or on groups of numbers. Different types of bets have both different odds as well as different payouts and they can be inside bets, outside bets, or announced bets.
Inside bets are the bets that get placed on numbers on the roulette table. Given that the chance of winning is lower, the payouts for this type of bet is higher. Players can bet on a single number (which is labeled as a “straight up bet”) with this type having the highest payout, at 35:1. Other inside bets are “split” (placing a bet on 2 numbers which are adjacent), “street” (placing the bet on 3 numbers which are consecutive), “six line” (placing the bet on 2 neighboring street bets), and “corner” (placing the bet on 4 numbers).
Outside bets are the types of bets that are being placed outside of the numbers. These have a higher chance of winning, but the payouts are lower when compared to inside bets. Players can bet on the color of the winning number, on whether the number that wins is odd or even, or on whether the number that wins is high or low (i.e. between 1 and 18 or between 19 and 39). Players can also bet on dozens (1 to 12, 13 to 24, and 25 to 36) or on columns (given the layout of the table).
Last but not least, announced bets can be found in the French and European version of the roulette game. Announced bets can be “neighbors of zero” (covering the zero pocket and the 7 numbers on either side of it), “third of the wheel” (covering a third of the wheel), “orphans” (covering one number and 4 splits), and “zero game” (which is a straight bet on the 26 pocket and 3 splits, which covers the pockets next to zero).
Determining the Winner
Bets are placed before rolling the ball on the wheel, with players putting chips on the betting mat, with the location where the chips are placed indicating the bet made. In order to determine both the winning number and color, the wheel spins in one direction with the ball spinning in the opposite direction around the wheel’s outer edge. The winning section is determined once the ball falls into one of the pockets on the wheel.
